What is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam — an obligatory annual almsgiving paid by every Muslim who meets the nisab (minimum wealth threshold) and has held that wealth for one full lunar year (hawl). The standard Zakat rate is 2.5% of total zakatable net wealth.

Zakat is not a charity — it is a right of the poor upon the wealthy. It purifies wealth and fulfills a social obligation embedded in Islamic economic principles. There are eight categories of eligible Zakat recipients defined in the Quran (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:60).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the nisab for 2025?
The gold nisab is approximately 85 grams of gold. At April 2025 gold prices (~$90/gram), this is approximately $7,650 USD. The silver nisab is 595g of silver — a much lower threshold (~$570). Most scholars recommend using the gold nisab.
Do I pay Zakat on my whole salary or just savings?
Zakat is calculated on wealth held for a full lunar year above the nisab — not on income as it comes in. At your Zakat date, calculate everything you own, subtract debts, and pay 2.5% if above nisab.
When should I pay Zakat?
Zakat is due once per lunar year (hawl) from the date your wealth first reached the nisab. Many Muslims choose to pay during Ramadan for extra reward.
