The Quranic Basis of Mirath

Allah says in the Quran: "Allah commands you regarding your children: for the male, what is equal to the share of two females." (Surah An-Nisa 4:11). Islamic inheritance law is one of the most precisely defined areas of fiqh, with fixed fractional shares (Faraid) assigned to each heir category.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this calculator give a legally binding inheritance division?
No. This tool estimates shares for common, straightforward family scenarios based on the fixed Faraid shares set out in the Quran. Real estates often involve additional heirs, debts, wasiyyah (bequests), or school-of-thought differences that require a qualified Islamic scholar or estate specialist to finalize.
Why do sons inherit double the share of daughters?
In the Quranic system, a son's share is paired with greater financial responsibility — he is obligated to provide for his wife, children, and extended family, while a daughter's inheritance remains entirely her own with no such obligation attached, in addition to any mahr (dower) and maintenance she is owed by her husband.
What happens if the deceased left a will (wasiyyah)?
Islamic law permits a wasiyyah of up to one-third of the net estate to non-heirs (e.g. charity or a friend), and it is deducted before the fixed Faraid shares are calculated on the remainder. A wasiyyah cannot be made to someone who is already a fixed heir, unless the other heirs unanimously consent after the death.
Are debts and funeral costs paid before inheritance is distributed?
Yes. Before any shares are calculated, the estate first covers funeral expenses, then outstanding debts, then any valid wasiyyah — only the remaining net estate is divided among the heirs according to their fixed shares.
